What is paint correction?

Paint correction is the process of levelling the clear coat with a machine polisher and abrasive compounds so that fine scratches and swirls disappear instead of just being filled in. Most of the "dullness" people see on a car is actually thousands of tiny marks scattering the light. Take them away and the paint reflects cleanly again – that's where the gloss comes from.

Every car that comes into our Stratford-upon-Avon studio is washed, decontaminated and inspected under strong lighting before a polisher touches it. That way we can show you exactly what can be improved and what can't, and agree the right level of correction before we start.

Signs your paint needs correcting

  • Circular "spider web" swirls visible in sunlight or under petrol station lights
  • Light scratches from car washes, brushes or careless drying
  • Faded, chalky or oxidised paint – common on reds and older cars
  • Water spots, bird dropping etching or buffer trails from a previous polish
  • You're planning a ceramic coating and want the best finish locked in underneath

Single-stage vs multi-stage correction

Single-stage machine polishing uses one combined cut-and-finish step. It removes the majority of light swirls and dramatically boosts gloss – ideal for well-kept daily drivers. It's included in our Full Detail from £120.

Multi-stage paint correction starts with a heavier cutting stage to remove deeper defects, then refines the paint with one or more finishing stages. It takes longer but delivers the sharpest, most mirror-like result. It's the heart of our Beast Detail from £260, and paint depth readings are available on request.

Paint correction FAQ

Common
questions

How much does paint correction cost in Stratford-upon-Avon?

Single-stage machine polishing is included in our Full Detail from £120 for a small car (from £130 medium, from £140 large). Multi-stage correction is part of the Beast Detail from £260. The final price depends on the size of the car and the condition of the paint, so we always confirm it before starting.

Will paint correction remove all scratches?

It removes defects that sit within the clear coat, such as swirls, holograms and most light scratches. If you can catch a scratch with your fingernail it has usually gone through the clear coat and can be reduced but not fully removed without paintwork. We'll tell you honestly what to expect after the inspection.

How long does paint correction take?

A single-stage polish usually takes a full day. Multi-stage correction on larger or very swirled cars can take two days or more. You'll get a time estimate with your quote.

Is paint correction safe for my paint?

Yes, when it's done properly. We always start with the least aggressive method that achieves the result, and can take paint depth readings so only a minimal amount of clear coat is removed.

Should I get a ceramic coating after paint correction?

It's the best time to do it. Correction creates the finish, and a ceramic coating protects it and makes washing much easier. Many customers book both together.
